textPortal is a copy-paste clipboard between devices. Type or paste on one, open the key on the other, and the text is there as you type. Free, no app, no account on either side.

Why it exists

It started with a locked-down work machine. Moving a snippet between a work computer and a personal phone meant emailing yourself, a chat app that IT had blocked, or typing it out again. textPortal needs only a browser at each end, so it works where the usual tools do not.

What it will not do

  • It will not keep your text. A key lasts 1 to 60 minutes. When it expires, or you end it, the text is deleted.
  • It will not make you sign up. Creating and opening a key needs no account. An optional account only saves canvases between visits.
  • It will not track you. No third-party scripts, no analytics services, no advertising cookies. The only numbers kept are anonymous daily totals, listed in the privacy policy.
  • It will not put ads where you share. The sharing screen stays clean.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no paid plan and nothing is held back. It runs on one small server for about 13 US dollars a month, paid by the person who built it. It is a side project, kept going to be useful rather than to make money.

How it is built

Ruby on Rails, with WebSockets carrying the text live between devices, a PostgreSQL database, and hosting on Render. Every script your browser loads comes from textportal.app itself, and the content security policy refuses anything else.
